Liberty Under God | Episode 5: What They Built — The Constitution and the Fallen Heart

← Media

What did the founders actually build after the war? Winning independence was one thing; building a government that could hold a free people together without sliding into chaos or tyranny was harder, and their first attempt failed. In episode five of Liberty Under God, Papa and Grandma Rita open the Constitution.

What this episode covers

The Constitution was the second try. The first attempt, the Articles of Confederation, was too weak to hold the states together, and the founders knew it. This episode opens what they built on the second attempt: federalism dividing power between nation and states, the separation of powers among three branches, and the checks and balances that set each against the others. The design rests on a clear-eyed and frankly biblical view of what a human being is. The founders feared a crowd as much as they feared a king, because they did not trust the human heart, their own included, with unchecked power. So they built a frame of government that assumes people will be tempted to abuse authority and structures the system to resist it. Papa and Grandma Rita show why this realism about human nature produced a remarkably durable design, arguably the most carefully thought-out frame of government any nation has ever written down. Drawn from the certified GraceHaven Academy American History course, the episode reads the Constitution not as a dry mechanism but as applied anthropology: what you believe about the human heart determines how you must build to protect liberty.
